WE MADE IT BACK TO the inn just before dawn. Without a word to Aleck and Drake, who seemed to have waited up for us, we walked up the stairs and collapsed onto our bed, holding each other for comfort as we reflected on what we had just witnessed.

Several silent tears later, my heavy eyelids closed and I slept, not caring that the sun was up or that I didn’t explain to Aleck what happened. I wasn’t ready to talk. Maybe later. No one noticed the little boy, hiding in the shadows, sneaking back to the stables either.
